Philly cheesesteaks are a beloved sandwich traditionally made with thinly sliced beef, but using ground beef makes this recipe quicker and more budget-friendly. The Instant Pot helps cook the meat and vegetables to perfection, making this an easy and delicious weeknight meal. Melted provolone cheese on a soft hoagie roll completes this mouthwatering sandwich.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 large red bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth
- 6-8 slices provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls or sandwich buns, sliced
- Optional: butter for toasting the rolls
Directions:
- Sauté the Vegetables:
Set the Instant Pot to the “Sauté” function and add olive oil. Once the oil is hot, add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Remove the vegetables from the pot and set them aside. - Brown the Ground Beef:
Add the ground beef to the Instant Pot and cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat if needed. - Season and Pressure Cook:
Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and beef broth to the browned beef. Stir well. Lock the Instant Pot lid in place, making sure the valve is set to “Sealing.” Set to “Pressure Cook” on high for 5 minutes. - Quick Release and Combine:
After the 5 minutes of cooking, perform a quick release by carefully turning the valve to “Venting.” Once all the pressure is released, open the lid and stir the cooked vegetables back into the ground beef mixture. - Assemble the Sandwiches:
Turn the Instant Pot to the “Sauté” function to keep the mixture warm. Lay provolone cheese slices on top of the beef and vegetable mixture and let them melt for about 1-2 minutes. - Toast the Rolls (Optional):
If desired, butter the hoagie rolls and lightly toast them in a skillet or oven. - Serve:
Spoon the cheesy beef and vegetable mixture onto the toasted hoagie rolls. Serve hot and enjoy!
Tips:
- For a spicier version, add some sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the beef mixture.
- Swap out provolone cheese for American cheese or Cheez Whiz for a more traditional Philly cheesesteak flavor.
- Serve with a side of fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
